William E. Goodwin, 82 of Celina, died Thursday, July 18, 2013. He was born September 1, 1930 in Dayton, Ohio to the late William G. and Helen (Stepleton) Goodwin. He married Margaret Ann Miller on August 2, 1958, who lives in Celina. Also surviving are his 3 children: Sandra and Kevin Mast of Celina, William A. (Buzz) and DeDe Goodwin of Englewood and Edward (Ted) and Lynette Goodwin of Celina; 6 grandchildren: AJ and Hanna Mast, William T., Andrew, Lucas and Kody Goodwin and cousins Carol Womble of Lima, Kay Dyer of Florida and Sara Badertscher of California. He was preceded in death by his cousin Ed Stepleton. He graduated from Fairview High School in 1948, received his Bachelor's degree in 1952 and Master's degree in 1956 from Miami University. He served from 1952 – 1954 in Korea and Japan as an army engineer. William was a teacher and principal in the Dayton Public Schools for 19 years and served as school board president for 7 years. He owned several camp grounds, mobile home parks and marinas around Grand Lake for the last 43 years. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #210, Celina VFW Post #5713, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1473 and a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge F & AM #717 in Dayton. He was a past president of the Dayton Teachers Credit Union, The Serving Our Schools Committee and The Dayton Federation of Teachers. He served on the Mercer County Board of Health and was a member of the Lake Improvement Association. A few of his accomplishments include: As school board president he was responsible for taking the Dayton Public Schools from a 17 million dollar deficit to an 18 million dollar surplus. He appeared twice in front of the United States Supreme Court opposing the forced bussing issue in the Dayton Public Schools. William was also a philanthropist with generous donations to Glenville State College for a new student dormitory, sponsorships for children overseas and numerous other charities. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Celina, with Rev. Matt Reynolds and Rev. Robert Metheny officiating. Burial will follow in Burdge Cemetery in Montezuma, Ohio with Military Honors. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. on Monday July 22, 2013 at the Lehman-Hogenkamp-Dzendzel Funeral Home in Celina and 1 hour before services at the church on Tuesday. American Legion and VFW membership services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, State of the Heart Home Health and Hospice or Glenville State College. Condolences may be left at
